Two Boeing 727 aircraft, TWA Flight 514 and Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 6231, crashed in unrelated incidents in the eastern United States. A total of 95 people were killed on board both aircraft.
Five armed men hijacked a bus carrying schoolchildren and a teacher in Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz, Russia). They were later given an aircraft and ransom for the release of the hostages.
